Ryan Dempster shocked a lot of people when he announced he was taking 2014 off from baseball. He didn’t announce officially that he was retiring, but he’s definitely out for the year. And before you drop your bloody mary and shout, “Great! We haven’t even gotten to Spring Training and we’re already a starter down!”, here are a number of reasons it’s more than just OK, it’s actually pennies from friggin heaven for the Sox.
A.) He gave the Sox the best he had in 2013, and while it wasn’t dazzling, overpowering or otherworldy, it was good enough, often enough, from the 5th spot, to eat innings, get a few wins and not be a disaster
B.) He obviously doesn’t think he can replicate last season, and if he’s gonna fly over those numbers, which found him a mostly Coach’s DNP in the postseason, then bravo, Dempster
C.) In addition to being a decent 5th starter in 2013 he probably did his best work as one of “the good guys”, the high-character types who helped repair the rifts and gaps that many of the d-heads and Valentines helped create in 2011/2012and…D.) he beaned A-Rod. For us, and everyone. And whether you liked it or not, for that night, the game, the team or the whatever, we have the benefit of champion’s hindsight, which allows a fan to say, “Hellz yeah, and if he could I hoe he’d do it again.”Dempster did his job, and now he’s making the choice, on his own, to take the year off, see if he feels like playing baseball again, and spend some time with the fam, on the heels of making a buttload last season, and winning a World Series ring. He’s a smart guy. he’s rich. He won’t worry about becoming a financial Antoine Walker 2,0 anytime soon. In doing what’s best for himself he’s kinda doing the Sox a solid, too; making way for a younger, healthier, fitter, stronger Felix Doubront to grab the 5 and do something, hopefully, great with it this season, while putting over $13 million back in their budget? Dempstah, dood, if I didn’t raise a glass to you often enough before I do it now, and will again soon - Cheers ‘n Beer, guy.And Let’s Go Sox.
